Radio broadcaster rbb kultur released a contribution entitled ‘With Hummus against Hate. Recipes for Jewish-Muslim Understanding’ last Sunday, 24.10.2021, a piece which brings together many different voices on the topic. In addition to the chairman of the Leo Baeck Foundation, Rabbi Prof. Walter Homolka, who speaks about the recently published book ‘Umdenken! Wie Islam und Judentum unsere Gesellschaft besser machen’, the Karov Qareeb coordinator Rachel de Boor, and participant Sonya Ouertani also feature in the piece. Both describe the specifics and challenges of the Jewish-Muslim think tank: ‘Karov and Qareeb are the same term in Hebrew and Arabic describing a state of closeness. And that is supposed to express that Judaism and Islam, or Jewish and Muslim people in Germany, already live in a certain closeness that challenges us all to deal with the topic.’
You can hear the entire contribution (in German) here.
˝The programme makes possible something that is all too rare in our society these days: speaking and having discussions across borders, not about each other, but with each other. That can be a hard slog at times, but at the same time the format makes space for follow-up questions and deeper conversations that are only possible through trust on all sides.
