Review: Memorial evening for Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich in Basel

Prof. Dr. Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich is inseparably linked with DialoguePerspectives. This year, he would have turned 100: a wonderful occasion to remember him and his life’s work in many places.

On the occasion of the 14th anniversary of Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich’s death, academics, colleagues, and friends of Ehrlich came together in Basel on 21 October 2021.

Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich was a committed and critical Jewish voice in numerous dialogue formats. His publications on Jewish-Christian relations continue to shape research to this day. Those who knew him in life provide impressive accounts of his commitment, including Kirchenrat President Rev. Prof. Dr Lukas Kundert, Prof. Dr Kathy Ehrensperger, as well as the Rector of the Abraham Geiger College and Director of the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk (ELES) Rabbi Prof. Walter Homolka PhD DHL.

Afterwards, ELES alumna Olga Osadtschy spoke about a ‘New Jewish Self-Consciousness after Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich’, before Rachel de Boor, DialoguePerspectives project manager, gave a short input on the central role Ehrlich still plays in what is now the seventh year of the DialoguePerspectives seminar programme. In particular, the following quote describes and accompanies our work with the participants in creating innovative, new modes of interreligious-worldview dialogue:

Dialogue must lead to something that is more than a factual identification of the respective point of view. It must lead to responsibility, to solidarity with each other.’

The evening was rounded off with a panel discussion moderated by Rev. Nico Rubeli. Participants were invited by the Evangelical Swiss Church in Israel, the JCAs of both Basel, the Jewish-Christian Academy, Jewish-Christian Projects, the Israelite Community of Basel, and the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Basel.

DialoguePerspectives is a great programme not only because of all the things you are going to learn during the seminars, not only because of the cool people you are going to meet but also because of the un-learning process that you will go through, getting rid of all the prejudices that you are not even aware of having.
