Episode 16: with Eleanor Sharpston QC about the EU Court of Justice, the process of opinion-writing and the role of the Advocate General

Episode 16 of (Re-)Shaping Europe is out now! We spoke with Eleanor Sharpston QC about the EU Court of Justice, about what goes into the process of writing an opinion, the role of the Advocate General, and about how some matters discussed at the EU Court of law are religious-cultural and legal issues at the same time.

Eleanor Sharpston studied economics, languages and law at King’s College (Cambridge) and afterwards did university teaching and interdisciplinary research at Corpus Christi College (Oxford). She practiced EEC, EC and EU law for 25 years, while also lecturing in EU law and comparative. Between 2006 and 2020 Eleanor Sharpston was UK Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Communities. During her time she presented more then 340 opinions. Today Eleanor Sharpston works in environmental law and is a member of the Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee (ACCC). For our Spring Seminar in Luxembourg in March 2022 we invited Eleanor to give our participants some insights of her work as an Advocate General and also about her perspectives on being a citizen of both the UK and Luxembourg.

˝Some wise person once wrote “The whole entire world is a very narrow bridge and the main thing is to have no fear at all.” I feel that thanks to DialoguePerspectives the world is becoming a network of interconnected bridges that we are building between each other together. Beautiful bridges thanks to which we can try to create a world together, a world free from prejudices and fear.
