#ERINNERUNGSFUTUR: Public Intervention by the Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse (CPPD) on the Day of German Unity 2021

The Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse launches a poster campaign in Halle (Saale) and Berlin highlighting diverse perspectives on remembrance culture. The 21 posters with quotations from members of the network of artists, academics, and intellectuals demand the pluralisation of remembrance culture and raise awareness of the gaps in dominant narratives. A social media campaign using the hashtag #Erinnerungsfutur is a part of the intervention.

Germany commemorates German reunification on 3 October. The state ceremonies and celebrations of the national holiday provide fail to sufficiently address important topics such as the investigation of and critical reflection on the right-wing violence that flourished in the years following reunification and East German perspectives on the processes of transformation that accompanied reunification. In 2021, the state of Sachsen-Anhalt hosted the central ceremonial observation of the Day of German Unity. It takes place just days before 9 October 2021, the second anniversary of the far-right attack on a synagogue and the murders of Kevin S. and Jana L. in Halle. The Day of German Unity must also address the continuities of anti-Semitism, racism, and antiziganism in Germany.

“For many people, the years 1989/1990 mark the beginning of systematic assaults and existential upheavals”, explains Johanna Korneli, head of the CPPD. “There is hardly any other day in the remembrance calendar of the Federal Republic on which the difficulties the majority society has in allowing for other histories besides its own become so visible.”

With the intervention #Erinnerungsfutur, the members of the CPPD attach their short statements to the decades-long pleas for more ambivalence in remembrance: “The remembrance culture of the future will be pluralistic. Not antiquated, not monumental, nothing repressed, nothing silenced”, says Ahmad Milad Karimi, professor of Islamic philosophy and CPPD member, in his quotation for the campaign.

The posters with quotations by Max Czollek, Ahmad Milad Karimi, Marieke Reimann, Ferda Ataman, Hamze Bytyci, Nadja Ofuatey-Alazard and many other will be distributed in Halle from 28 September 2021 and in Berlin from 2 October 2021, and will be available on the CPPD Instagram account from 30 September 2021.

Johanna Korneli (Dialogueperspectives/Leo Baeck Foundation), one of the three heads of the CPPD, is available for interviews on the CPPD.

Pressemitteilung: Öffentliche Intervention der Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse (CPPD) zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit

PRESSEMITTEILUNG

Berlin, 30. September 2021

˝DialoguePerspectives offers a unique change of perspective! The programme allows you to really grapple with current and highly societally relevant questions, to reflect on your own identity, and to get to know the diversity of European identities. I am very grateful for the intensive personal discussion and encounters, and the great amount of food for thought that has stuck with me long past the seminars.
